Who Owns Your Business Domain — and Why It Matters

Your domain is the address used for your website and often your business email. If access is lost or the renewal is missed, both services can be affected. Despite that, many businesses are unsure who actually controls the account.

Registration Is Not the Same as Everyday Management

A designer or previous supplier may have registered the domain on your behalf. That is not automatically a problem, but the business should know where it is registered, whose details are attached and how access can be recovered.

Keep a record of:

  • The domain registrar
  • The account owner and contact email
  • The renewal date and payment method
  • Who can edit DNS records
  • Any transfer lock or recovery details

Why DNS Access Matters

DNS records connect the domain to services including the website, business email and verification tools. A supplier may need access when moving hosting or configuring Microsoft 365.

These records should be changed carefully. Removing an unfamiliar entry without checking it can interrupt a service that appears unrelated.

Before a Transfer:
Take a copy of the complete DNS configuration and confirm which records control the website and email.

Warning Signs to Look For

Review the setup if:

  • Renewal notices go to a former employee or supplier
  • Nobody knows the registrar login
  • The domain is paid through an old personal card
  • The website and email depend on undocumented DNS records
  • A previous agency is the only party with access

These issues are much easier to resolve while the domain is active and everybody is still contactable.

Should the Domain Be Transferred?

Not every domain needs to move. If the account is accessible, correctly registered and renewing reliably, it may be sensible to leave it where it is.

A transfer can be useful when consolidating suppliers or taking control from a previous provider. Plan it around any website or email work and avoid making several major changes without a record of the original setup.

Treat the Domain as a Business Asset

The business should retain enough information to prove ownership, renew the domain and appoint a new technical contact if necessary. Access should not depend entirely on one external supplier.

A simple annual check of registration, contact details, renewal and DNS access can prevent a much larger problem later.

92 Design helps Cardiff and South Wales businesses register, transfer and manage domains alongside website hosting, DNS and business email.
